Advisory Council

The Advisory Council for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Department of Food Science serves as an external advisory group to the Chair, faculty and students of the department. Members are asked for counsel and advice concerning programs in teaching, research and extension for the Department of Food Science. The Council represents the variety of stakeholders with whom the department, through its programs, interact. It serves as a two-way communication channel providing advice and counsel on those issues which the Chair brings to the Council and serving as a mechanism by which concerns from the stakeholders can be brought to the attention of the Chair.

Kristin Alongi is the Director of Portfolio Management at Rich Products Corporation in Buffalo, NY, overseeing their go-to-market process and portfolio management for New Product Development. Prior to this role, Kristin spent time in R&D as product developer for Rich’s Innovation and Bakery Teams. She holds a BA in Chemistry from Hamilton College, MS in Food Science from Cornell University, and an MBA from SUNY Oswego.

Tim Andon is the Business Development Manager at TIC Gums, Inc. He has more than 10 years’ experience in a variety of functions including purchasing, technical sales, and business development. His current role in Business Development focuses on commercializing new products at TIC Gums and training new food scientists for future roles in the company. Tim has a B.S. in Food Science from Cornell University.

Shen-Youn Chang, Ph.D. is Vice President for Quality and Regulatory Affairs for Mizkan America, Inc., a leading manufacturer and marketer of vinegars, pasta sauces, condiments, hot peppers, and a variety of liquid condiments.  The products are revered throughout the world for Bringing Flavor to Life™. Previously, he served as Vice President, Quality and Compliance of Fairway Market, a specialty grocery chain based in New York City servicing the tri-state area.  Prior to that he served as Vice President, R&D, Quality and Regulatory affairs for Beech-Nut Nutrition Corporation and Heinz North America where he held various leadership roles in Quality/Technical Management and always served as the thermal process authority for the company.

Michelle Colban is a Global Brand Manager at Unilever, with experience in Brand Management and New Product Development. She graduated from Cornell with a B.S. in Food Science and received an MBA in Marketing from The Johnson School. Her career experience spans across a range of CPG categories including food (beverages, soups, sauces, spreads) and personal care (skin cleansing, skin care, hair).  Michelle is an active Cornell volunteer, has served as President of the CALS Alumni Association Board of Directors, is a visiting lecturer in CALS, and leads Unilever's on campus recruiting team.

Bill Graves is Senior Vice President- Product Research at Dairy Management Inc.  Dairy Management Inc. is the parent group to the National Dairy Council, U.S. Dairy Export Council and the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy.  He leads the product research program to drive innovation and sales of dairy products and ingredients on behalf of U.S. dairy farmers.  He is responsible for all aspects of product research including developing the strategic agenda, working with stakeholders to set national priorities, and providing oversight for the National Dairy Foods Research Center program.

After graduating Cornell with a BS in Food Science and obtaining a MS in Food Science at Rutgers,  Leslie joined Unilever over 35 years ago. During his career he has worked on a extensive portfolio of products including soup, side dishes, peanut butter, frozen meals  and  beverages (tea based and non tea based). At his retirement in 2014 he became the Vice President of Operations & Research Services of the Understanding & Insight Group, LLC.  

Ed Jaquay

Ed Jaquay is the General Manager of Northeastern Operations for Prolient Dairy Ingredients and is responsible for establishment of an operating business unit to process Greek yogurt acid whey into functional dairy ingredients. Formerly of Great Lakes Cheese and Leprino Foods, he has extensive experience in all aspects of the food manufacturing industry.

Leland Global Enterprises specializes in Flavor & Food R&D and African Ventures.  Dr. Leland is a senior research professional with nearly 30 years’ experience in the food industry. Formerly a Kraft Fellow, she provided broad technical and organizational leadership across Research, Development, Quality & Innovation. In this capacity she shaped future technical leaders, identifying pipeline technologies, and directing cutting edge research enabling sodium/sugar reduced foods, simpler ingredient lines, etc.

Jonathan is Sr. Manager for PepsiCo in Global Foods R&D based in Plano, Texas. He manages the Frito-Lay R&D seasoning team as well as leads the PepsiCo global foods seasoning platform team. Jonathan has been working in product development at PepsiCo since graduating from Cornell with a PhD in food science in 1999.  In 2009, he was the recipient of the Cornell CALS Young Alumni Achievement Award.

Currently Chuck is working for Elevation Brands, LLC as CEO, Chuck has impacted the business by providing leadership and experience with pioneering Allergy Friendly/ Gluten Free products, and value added sustainable seafood with the Ian’s and Blue Horizon Wild brands respectively.

Chief Scientific Officer, Eurofins Microbiology Inc.

Dr. Marshall is Chief Scientific Officer for the global life sciences company Eurofins Microbiology Inc.and cofounder and Director of the Louisiana-based company the Food Safety Institute, LLC. He formerly held academic positions at Louisiana State University, Mississippi State University, and University of Northern Colorado, where he last served as Associate Dean and Professor of Public Health, College of Natural and Health Sciences. Dr. Marshall received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Florida and he is a Certified Food Scientist.

Jim Matthews is the founder of JEM Innovations LLC. Previously at Keurig Green Mountain as Vice President, Beverage Quality, Jim was responsible for quality, food safety, product compliance and support to new product development.
Jim joined Keurig Green Mountain from H.J. Heinz Company where he served as Group Vice-President - R&D/Innovation North America and Emerging Markets, and previously as Vice President R&D and Quality since 1999.

Dr. Alejandro Mazzotta was appointed Vice President of Global Quality, Food Safety and Regulatory Affairs with Chobani in 2013.  Prior to joining Chobani, Dr. Mazzotta held various positions with Campbell Soup Company, McDonald’s Corporation, and the Pillsbury Company with General Mills. Dr. Mazzotta was elected to serve in the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) Executive Board for a five-year term of successive positions, and currently serves as IAFP President. He serves on the advisory boards for the Center for Food Safety at the University of Georgia (CFS) and BioMerieux, and is a member of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT).

Casey McCue is the Director of Milk Control and Dairy Services at the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets.  Casey has been involved in the dairy industry his entire life.  Growing up, he was deeply involved with his grandparent’s dairy farm in Lewis County.  Casey attended SUNY Canton and earned his Associates Degree in Dairy Foods.  Before entering public service, he worked for Kraft General Foods in their cream cheese facility in the Quality Assurance Department and as a Certified Milk Inspector for Lowville Producers Dairy Cooperative.

Kathleen O'Donnell started her career at Wegmans as a part-time employee in the bakery.  Following her graduation from Cornell University (B.S., M.S.), she became a member of the quality assurance team at Wegmans Meat Center, focusing on product quality assurance, environmental monitoring programs and product development.  She developed the first HACCP program for the Wegmans Meat Center.  Kathleen is now Chief Food Scientist and addresses issues of a regulatory, technical or scientific nature for food and non-food products.

Ms. Perez has extensive experience leading business development and global operations for 3M, including her time as International Director, and then Business Vice President, with 3M Infection Prevention Division. With a strong background in technical, marketing and business operations, Silvia provides strategic vision, focused leadership and creative passion to 3M Food Safety.

Dr. Ruth Petran is Vice President, Food Safety and Public Health at Ecolab.  She provides technical expertise and consultation to internal and external customers on food safety and public health issues, by identifying and tracking emerging food safety trends and new control strategies. Dr. Petran has a Bachelor of Science degree in Consumer Food Science from Cornell, a, MS in Food Science from the University of Minnesota, and PhD in Public Health from the University of Minnesota.

Marlene Quijano was Vice President, Research, Development, Quality and Innovation for the Beverages Business Unit.  She was responsible for R&D Leadership across Product, Process, Packaging, Quality and Consumer Science within the Coffee and Refreshment Beverages Categories, as well as the Tarrytown, NY, Technical Center site.

Dr. Anju Rao is currently a Director with Starbucks.  She was formerly Director of Research and Development for Campbell Soup Company with accountability for product and process development for approximately $1.0B Net Sales consisting of established brands like Swanson, Prego and Pace. Her twelve year tenure at Campbell’s spans multiple Business Units, both in Retail and Foodservice focused on sustaining innovation and productivity.
