Advisory Council

The Advisory Council for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Department of Food Science serves as an external advisory group to the Chair, faculty and students of the department. Members are asked for counsel and advice concerning programs in teaching, research and extension for the Department of Food Science. The Council represents the variety of stakeholders with whom the department, through its programs, interact. It serves as a two-way communication channel providing advice and counsel on those issues which the Chair brings to the Council and serving as a mechanism by which concerns from the stakeholders can be brought to the attention of the Chair.

Kristin Alongi

Rich Products Corporation, Director of Portfolio and Governance
Kristin Alongi is the Director of Portfolio Management at Rich Products Corporation in Buffalo, NY, overseeing their go-to-market process and portfolio management for New Product Development. Prior to this role, Kristin spent time in R&D as product developer for Rich’s Innovation and Bakery Teams. She holds a BA in Chemistry from Hamilton College, MS in Food Science from Cornell University, and an MBA from SUNY Oswego.
 

Timothy J. Andon

TIC Gums, Business Development Manager
Tim Andon is the Business Development Manager at TIC Gums, Inc. He has more than 10 years’ experience in a variety of functions including purchasing, technical sales, and business development. His current role in Business Development focuses on commercializing new products at TIC Gums and training new food scientists for future roles in the company. Tim has a B.S. in Food Science from Cornell University.
 

Michelle Colban

Global Brand Development Manager, Unilever
Michelle Colban is a Global Brand Manager at Unilever, with experience in Brand Management and New Product Development. She graduated from Cornell with a B.S. in Food Science and received an MBA in Marketing from The Johnson School. Her career experience spans across a range of CPG categories including food (beverages, soups, sauces, spreads) and personal care (skin cleansing, skin care, hair).  Michelle is an active Cornell volunteer, has served as President of the CALS Alumni Association Board of Directors, is a visiting lecturer in CALS, and leads Unilever's on campus recruiting team.
 

Nick Dokoozlian

VP of Viticulture, Chemistry and Enology, E&J Gallo Winery
Dr. Nick Dokoozlian is the Vice President of Viticulture, Chemistry and Enology at E&J Gallo Winery in Modesto, CA.  He also serves as the Research Chair for the National Grape and Wine Initiative, as well as an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Viticulture and Enology.

Andrew Gellert

President, The Gellert Global Group
Andrew Gellert is the President of Gellert Global Group headquartered in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The Gellert Global Group consists of many of the leading North American food importing companies, and has been involved in importing food products for nearly 100 years.  The family member companies of the Gellert Global Group bring a broad variety of imported food products to all aspects of the food industry.  The combined revenues of the Group exceed $800 million.  The combined resources of the Group companies provide strength in sourcing, insurance, finance, logistics, and information technology.

Bill Graves

Dairy Management Inc., Sr. VP, Product Research
Bill Graves is Senior Vice President- Product Research at Dairy Management Inc.  Dairy Management Inc. is the parent group to the National Dairy Council, U.S. Dairy Export Council and the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy.  He leads the product research program to drive innovation and sales of dairy products and ingredients on behalf of U.S. dairy farmers.  He is responsible for all aspects of product research including developing the strategic agenda, working with stakeholders to set national priorities, and providing oversight for the National Dairy Foods Research Center program. 

Leslie Herzog

Advisory Council Chair, The Understanding & Insight Group, LLC; VP of Operations and Research Services
After graduating Cornel University  with a BS in Food Science and obtaining an MS in Food Science at Rutgers University, Leslie joined Unilever.  During his career he has worked on an extensive portfolio of products including soups, side dishes, peanut butter, frozen complete meals, and beverages (both tea and non-tea based).  At his retirement in 2014 after 35 years of service, he became the Vice President of Operations & Research Services for The Understanding & Insight Group, LLC. 

Dr. Jonathan Licker

Sr. Manager R&D Snack Seasonings & Flavors, Frito-Lay
Jonathan is Sr. Manager for PepsiCo in Global Foods R&D based in Plano, Texas. He manages the Frito-Lay R&D seasoning team as well as leads the PepsiCo global foods seasoning platform team. Jonathan has been working in product development at PepsiCo since graduating from Cornell with a PhD in food science in 1999.  In 2009, he was the recipient of the Cornell CALS Young Alumni Achievement Award.      


Chuck Marble

Advisory Council Incoming Chair, President, Stavis Seafoods, Inc.
Chuck Marble is an experienced executive in the food industry, with the capacity of managing all facets of a corporation both domestically and international. He has over 25 years experience in the Food Industry, including Executive Management, Sales, Marketing, and Plant Operations. Most recently, working for Stavis Seafoods, Inc. as their new President. 

Douglas L. Marshall

Chief Scientific Officer, Eurofins Microbiology Inc.
Dr. Marshall is Chief Scientific Officer for the global life sciences company Eurofins Microbiology Inc.and cofounder and Director of the Louisiana-based company the Food Safety Institute, LLC. He formerly held academic positions at Louisiana State University, Mississippi State University, and University of Northern Colorado, where he last served as Associate Dean and Professor of Public Health, College of Natural and Health Sciences. Dr. Marshall received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Florida and he is a Certified Food Scientist.

James E. Matthews

JEM Innovations, LLC
Jim Matthews is the founder of JEM Innovations LLC. Previously at Keurig Green Mountain as Vice President, Beverage Quality, Jim was responsible for quality, food safety, product compliance and support to new product development.
Jim joined Keurig Green Mountain from H.J. Heinz Company where he served as Group Vice-President - R&D/Innovation North America and Emerging Markets, and previously as Vice President R&D and Quality since 1999.   

Alejandro Mazzotta

Chobani, VP Global Quality, Food Safety & Regulatory Affairs
Dr. Alejandro Mazzotta was appointed Vice President of Global Quality, Food Safety and Regulatory Affairs with Chobani in 2013.  Prior to joining Chobani, Dr. Mazzotta held various positions with Campbell Soup Company, McDonald’s Corporation, and the Pillsbury Company with General Mills. Dr. Mazzotta was elected to serve in the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) Executive Board for a five-year term of successive positions, and currently serves as IAFP President. He serves on the advisory boards for the Center for Food Safety at the University of Georgia (CFS) and BioMerieux, and is a member of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT).
 

Casey McCue

Director, Division of Milk Control & Dairy Services, NYS Dept. of Ag & Markets
Casey McCue is the Director of Milk Control and Dairy Services at the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets.  Casey has been involved in the dairy industry his entire life.  Growing up, he was deeply involved with his grandparent’s dairy farm in Lewis County.  Casey attended SUNY Canton and earned his Associates Degree in Dairy Foods.  Before entering public service, he worked for Kraft General Foods in their cream cheese facility in the Quality Assurance Department and as a Certified Milk Inspector for Lowville Producers Dairy Cooperative. 

Kathleen O’Donnell

Chief Food Scientist, Wegmans Food Markets, Inc.
Kathleen O'Donnell started her career at Wegmans as a part-time employee in the bakery.  Following her graduation from Cornell University (B.S., M.S.), she became a member of the quality assurance team at Wegmans Meat Center, focusing on product quality assurance, environmental monitoring programs and product development.  She developed the first HACCP program for the Wegmans Meat Center.  Kathleen is now Chief Food Scientist and addresses issues of a regulatory, technical or scientific nature for food and non-food products.
 

Ruth Petran

VP Food Safety and Public Health, Ecolab, Inc.
Dr. Ruth Petran is Vice President, Food Safety and Public Health at Ecolab.  She provides technical expertise and consultation to internal and external customers on food safety and public health issues, by identifying and tracking emerging food safety trends and new control strategies. Dr. Petran has a Bachelor of Science degree in Consumer Food Science from Cornell, a, MS in Food Science from the University of Minnesota, and PhD in Public Health from the University of Minnesota.  
Marlene Quijano was Vice President, Research, Development, Quality and Innovation for the Beverages Business Unit.  She was responsible for R&D Leadership across Product, Process, Packaging, Quality and Consumer Science within the Coffee and Refreshment Beverages Categories, as well as the Tarrytown, NY, Technical Center site.

Erica Reiner

Advisory Council Past Chair, Vice President of Sales, North America, IFF
Erica Reiner is Vice President, Strategic Business Development at David Michael & Co., a global flavor house specializing in innovative flavor solutions for the food and beverage industry. Over the course of her career at David Michael, Erica has overseen key account relationships, established strategic alliances, overseen the development of the company’s annual Innovation Roadshow™, and managed DM’s Sales Training Account Management Program (STAMP).

Brad Riemenapp

Global VP and General Manager, Covance
Mr. Riemenapp is the head of the Covance Food Solutions Division of LabCorp.  In this capacity, Mr. Riemenapp has P&L responsibility including all operational and commercial aspects of the business on a Global basis.  The Food Solutions Business includes analytical testing services in Inorganic Chemistry, Proximate/Lipids Chemistry, Vitamin Chemistry, Microvitamin Chemistry, Microbiology, Food Packaging, Pesticides, Product Development,  and a wide range of Food Consulting Services.

Michael Robach

VP of Corporate Food Safety, Quality & Regulatory Affairs, Cargill
Mike Robach is Vice President, Corporate Food Safety, Quality & Regulatory for Cargill based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Mike is past President for Safe Supply of Affordable Food Everywhere (SSAFE), Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), a member of the Scientific and Regulatory Affairs Council Executive Committee for the Grocery Manufacturers Association, and a member of the U.S. Poultry and Egg Association’s Research Advisory Committee.

Peter Salmon

President & CEO International Food Network, Inc.
In 1987 Mr. Salmon founded the International Food Network (IFN) to provide advisory services to the food, beverage and supplement industries.  Peter earned his B.S. in Food Science & Human Nutrition from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst), his M.S. from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) in Food Science (Food Microbiology) and his M.B.A. from Fordham University (Gabelli Graduate School of Business) in Marketing & Finance.  He is a Certified Food Scientist, a Certified Packaging Professional, a Fellow of the Institute of Food Technologists and a Fellow of the Institute of Food Science & Technology (UK).

George Sent

KeyBanc Capital Market, Head of M&A for Food & Ag
George Sent has over twenty years of investment banking, financial consulting, and executive management experience.He currently serves as Head of M&A for the Food & Agriculture effort at KeyBanc Capital Markets. He is responsible for execution and sourcing of the firm’s assignments within the industry.   As an advisor to some of the world’s most well-known food, beverage, and agriculture companies, Mr. Sent has focused his practice on both public and private advisory services as well as debt and equity financing.   

M. Elizabeth Westring, PhD

General Mills, VP, Global Quality & Regulatory Operations
Dr. M. Elizabeth Westring serves as the Vice President of Global Quality and Regulatory Operations for General Mills.  In this capacity, she acts as the chief company officer for assuring product safety, regulatory compliance, and product quality.   In addition, the organization provides significant external support to industry groups and government agencies through expertise in toxicology, microbiology, and risk assessment.  Dr. Westring has been with General Mills for 31 years and has held positions in Quality, R&D, and Marketing and was promoted to Vice President of QRO in 2005.

Bruce Wolcott

VP Marketing, Seneca Foods Corporation
Bruce Wolcott is Vice President of Marketing for Marion, NY-based  Seneca Foods Corporation, at $1.3B in sales among the largest canned food processing companies in North America. He oversees the marketing functions of several brands, including Libby’s® Fruits and Vegetables, Aunt Nellie’s® Pickled Beets, READ® Vegetable Salads and Green Valley® Organic Vegetables.
